American Idol Rankings: the Top 16

Things are getting better, really, they are.

We are down now to the top 16, and one week closer to crowning your next American Idol. Now with two live weeks under our belts, we are beginning to get a feel for everyone. Those who have a legitimate shot at the Nokia, who we'll be seeing on the Idols Live tour this summer, who will be lucky to perform on the big stage just once, who is the luckiest person just to have made it through two results shows already (mmm, Tim Urban?) Last week, we had another solid week - Jermaine Sellers was eighth in our rankings among guys, while John Park was seventh. Haeley Vaughn was our tenth-ranked girl, Michelle Delamore was our biggest suprise of the week, she had been our fourth-ranked girl after a strong week one.

This week, four final contestants go home, and then we'll have a top twelve, equipped with a full band, full stage, and yes, the return of the always cheesy Ford music videos.

After the jump, our third set of power rankings, and if you agree or don't, feel free to sound off!

So here we go - let's try this yet again, the number in parentheses is the number we ranked the contestant last week.

The Girls (Performing Tuesday, 8/7c on FOX)

From last week's show here is what we found: This could be a girl's year after all, there are three girls who are real contenders right now in this competiton, beyond that there are just a bunch of okay singers vying for a spot in the top 12.

8) Lacey Brown (6)
Sorry Lacey, we like you, but your time is sadly running out. We guess the judges made the right decision putting Megan Joy into last season's top 36 over you.

7) Didi Benami (7)
Week one Didi had a solid performance, last week she butchered her number - this week, we guess it's a grab bag.

6) Katie Stevens (5)
Unlike some of the front-runners you'll see later on in the power rankings who have been ascending by the week, Katie is going in the other direction. We just don't see it with her. Yes, she would steal the show (and we're sure she has) at her high school's cabaret night, but the next American Idol? Really? We don't think so.

5) Paige Miles (8)
In a weak year of singers, Paige will probably sneak into the top 12, but not much further. However, who knows for sure, Paige could easily pick a bad song, and in two weeks time, it will be like she was never a contestant.

4) Katelyn Epperly (9)
Here is spot #4, kind of the wildcard spot for the girls, there are the big threee who we are going to regularly see occupy the top 3 girls spot, then we have this spot for whoever had a stand-out performance from the rest of the girls that week. This week the spot goes to Katelyn, of course, last week Michelle was in this spot - and that didn't turn out great.

3) Siobhan Magnus (2)
As we said last week, the girl may not be a genius (she is a glassblowing apprentice, afterall!) One thing is sure though, this girl can belt out a tune. We now know she learned to do that in the shower, I would have guessed it was from the glassblowing, guess not.

2) Lilly Scott (3)
Each week Lilly has moved up in our power rankings, and we wouldn't be suprised to see that trend continue. She is unique, memorable, and in a weird sort of way a little more current than Crystal.

1) Crystal Bowersox (1)
No suprise here. As Randy "The Dawg" would say, "When you can sing, you can sing." Crystal can sign with a harmonica, when she's sick, when she's not - the girl can sing. While still the frontrunner for the girls, and maybe the entire group, Crystal's challenge is going to be from here on out to bring something new and different to the table, because we know Lilly and Siobhan can, have, and will do that.

The Guys (Performing Wednesday, 9/8c on FOX)

The guys certainly let the girls get back into the game this week, and after some suprise performances (both of good and bad variety) the picture is a little murkier than it was last week at this time.

8) Tim Urban (10)
Well, one thing you can atleast say about Tim is he's consistent. With him, it's an off-key, horrible performance week-after-week.

7) Todrick Hall (6)
We imagine Todrick will destroy one final song on Wednesday night and be gone before he has the chance to ruin anything more on the big stage.

6) Casey James (3)
Had one of the best performances of week one, had one of the worst of week two. The ladies are still going to vote though, Casey's not going anywhere this week, but to the top 12 celebration party.

5) Alex Lambert (9)
We're still not sure about the whole Alex Lambert thing, he's kind of a poor-man's Jason Castro in our book, and not nearly as likable.

4) "Big Mike" Lynche (5)
We know he had the first performance of last week, but he also had THE performance of last week. Let's see if Big Mike can build on last week, and if he can - he'll be around for a while.

3) Aaron Kelley (4)
As we have been saying all along, the kid can sing, he put some twang into the Temptations. The only way he's in trouble this week is a) he forgets the words, b) does another Katie Stevens-type song, or c) changes his mind and tells Ryan he is not a fan of Justin Bieber.

2) Andrew Garcia (2)
Why's everyone so down on Andrew? The guy hasn't had a real great performance yet, but he's still been of the better guys (or girls, for that matter.) Andrew has a great, smooth voice and we have a feeling this week Andrew will find his groove.

1) Lee Dewyze (1)
Sticking in the top spot is Lee Dewyze. Lee's current and he falls into the type of singer that has been winning idol lately. When you think about it, Lee is somewhere inbetween David Cook and Kris Allen - and that is not a bad place to be.
